Competition Time: Design us a logo!

image from here

There's a lot going on here at Magpie towers, organising The Spider and The Fly our 6 week craft extravaganza, building websites, organising craft parties.....Phew! We're pretty wiped out!

The Spider and the Fly is all about collaboration. So, we want you to design a logo for The Spider and the Fly.

What we want: Something eye catching, fun, that shows what Magpie and The Spider and the Fly is all about (that's handmade, well designed, high quality, quirky...). We have no specific ideas in mind, no colours or sizes to stick to....so go crazy! All it needs to say is 'The Spider and the Fly'

What you get: We'll use your design on our fliers, posters, website, blog and various other places and tell the world that you designed it. As well as that we'll give you space in The Spider and the Fly and not charge you a penny of commission for the 6 week duration!

Entries close: 8th June - so you have 2 weeks....get drawing, cutting and sticking!

Please send entries and any questions to magpiemarket@gmail.com with the subject - Logo Design

Magpie presents....The Spider and the Fly

Magpie Wants....

Your Work

Are you a Crafty Norman? Creative Betty? Fancy the chances to showcase and sell your work this summer?

Magpie will be creating a fabulous, pop-up gallery space, The Spider and the Fly, filled with your original art work and prints and a quirky boutique stuffed to the brim with handmade treasures from the best indie designers around (that's you!).

We're open to just about anything – clothing, accessories, jewellery, home wares, toys – with a focus on handmade or vintage, well designed, unique and original products, so if you think you fit the bill get in touch for more information!

Your Skills

The Spider and the Fly is not just about selling your work. We want to provide the chance for you to share, swap and learn new skills and ideas. We will be running a series of workshops and events throughout the summer. If you're interested in hosting a workshop or demonstration (or have a specific request for a skill you'd like to learn) then get in touch with details.

Help!

With just less than two weeks to go until Magpie descends, it's a little like a scene from the Birds around here - but with less scary birds and more craft...maybe nothing like The Birds at all then - but hey, it's a good picture!

So anyway, there is a point to this post - we're after volunteers to help us out with the set-up and running of Magpie on 6th December. You could be helping us decorate the venue, showing people to their stalls, going on coffee runs, handing out fliers, directing people to the event, supervising Frank the Christmas Tree, helping out in our crafting area and various other things...

What we're after: a fun, friendly and cheerful soul who doesn't mind getting stuck in.

What we can offer: experience, references, a tea, coffee & lunch allowance (depending on length of time helping), a fun (but possibly hectic) day!

We've not set a time limit for volunteers, but we'd love one or two really fabulous people to be with us all day, but if you can only offer an hour or two that's fine aswell! Email us (magpiemarket@googlemail.com) with a little bit of information about yourself and what you might be able to help out with!

home sweet home

The LOT will be our home on December 6th and we are very much looking forward to moving in!

Housed in a converted church in the heart of the Grassmarket in Edinburgh is the LOT. We are commandeering the whole building, which includes the airy space upstairs (with fabulous ceiling!), balcony and cosy bistro!

So, how do I get there? I hear you ask....

The LOT is situated at the west end of the Grassmarket, in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle. it is around a ten minute walk from the city centre and Waverley Station (exit via Waverley Bridge).

The Grassmarket and surrounding area is well known for it's unique boutique shops, and we are so pleased to be a part of that for the day!

Get Involved

So, you want to get involved with Magpie, but you're too far away/too busy/enter other reason here? (delete as appropriate) Well, do we have the solution for you!?

Why, yes we do!

As part of Magpies festivities, we shall have a little Christmas tree (called Frank) and we want your decorations to adorn the little fellow and your gifts to sit under his branches! These will be sold off throughout the day, with all proceeds going to the Woodland Trust. Think of it as a wee promotional opportunity (attach a business card or label to your decorations and make your wrapping out of flyers and adverts for your business) and a chance to do a good deed for trees everywhere!

Interested? email or leave a comment for details!

Keep an eye out for more opportunities coming soon!

Monday 16th November

Well, what a hectic week here at Magpie headquarters! I shant go into the ins and outs of what has happened this week, as I'm sure it's not very interesting to read!

We've had a fantastic response to Magpie, with some excellent applications, lovely messages and lots of support from everyone! Special thanks to our twitter followers or spreading the word!
I was very surprised when I started getting emails from people who had read about us in the Evening News on Saturday night! There have been a few people who contacted me yesterday to say that they wouldn't be able to get their applications in until today, so in the interest of fairness I have extended the deadline until today! However, I won't be sending out any new applications. So, if you requested an application pack and thought you'd missed out please send in your applications quickly!

A full vendor list will be announced on Wednesday!
